Description
Everlight PT334 5mm Infrared PhototransistorHigh quality general purpose IR phototransistors. The PT334 can be used for many different applications and responds to a wide range of the infrared spectrum. It is best used as a sensor of IR within 12" of the device. The transistor is very sensitive and responsive but not at long ranges. The maximum collector current is around 3mA. Since the transistor responds to ambient IR it is almost always in a semi-on state. For hobbyists it would be best to experiment with the transistor as a voltage divider into the ADC of a microcontroller such as Arduino. With careful choice of a resistor and some basic code the transistor can become a day/night sensor, or a very sensitive motion sensor. The transistor can easily detect the slight IR emitted from a finger or other warm object within a few inches of the device.
