The largest submarines of World War II, Japan's I-400 class boats were underwater aircraft carriers designed to take three M6A Seiran aircraft to their target.
    Please note:
Unlike other releases in this series, this particular model ships in a plastic clamshell case only, without a cardboard outer box and without a Japanese language magazine.
    I-400-class Submarine
Designed as a submersible aircraft carrier, the I-400-class entered service in 1944. The I-400-class were the largest submarines of World War II and were capable of carrying three Aichi M6A Seiran aircraft. In fact, the M6A was purpose-built to be stowed in the narrow confines of the submarine's water-tight hangar and launched by compressed-air catapult. The submarine would covertly approach a target while submerged, surface, launch its aircraft and then quickly submerge to relative safety. Although a fleet of 18 such submarines was planned, only three were completed.
