MERCATOR “RMS BERENGARIA” (SS IMPERATOR) (M 418) 1:1250 SCALE METAL MODEL SHIP

Description

Built as the “SS Imperator”
,
the
“RMS Berengaria”
was
launched May 23, 1912. She was built by AG Vulcan in Germany for Hamburg-American Line. Leaving Cuxhaven on June 11,1913 on her maiden voyage, she arrived in New York June 19, 1913 after scheduled stops at Cherbourg and Southampton. She returned to Europe June 25,1913 from New Jersey. In October 1913 she was refit at the Vulcan shipyard to improve handling and stability as it had been discovered that her center of gravity was too high.
During World War I Imperator was laid up at Hamburg and inactive, however at the end of the war she was used by the United States as a transport between France and New York,
returning over 25,000 troops, nurses, and civilians to the United States. Then in early 1919, she was decommissioned at Hoboken, New Jersey and on September 20, 1919  Imperator was transferred to the
British Shipping Controller to be operated by Cunard and renamed
RMS Berengaria
where she
served as flagship of the Cunard fleet until she was replaced by her sister ship, RMS Majestic.
During prohibition she earned the nickname “Bargain-area” as she was used for discounted Prohibition-dodging runs.
She was retired in 1938 and
sold to
Sir John Jarvis
to provide work for unemployed shipbuilders in
Jarrow
,
County Durham where she was scrapped.
