TheType 1936A destroyers, also known as theZ23class, were a group of fifteendestroyersbuilt for theNazi Germany'sKriegsmarinefrom 1938 to 1943. They were known to theAlliesas theNarvik class. In common with other German destroyers launched after the start of World War II, the Narviks were unnamed, known only by their hull numbers Z23toZ39.
TheGerman destroyer Z1Leberecht Maasswas thelead shipofher classof fourdestroyersbuilt for the German Navy (initially called theReichsmarineand then renamed as theKriegsmarinein 1935) during the mid-1930s. Completed in 1937, two years before the start of World War II, the ship served as aflagshipand spent most of her time training, although she did participate in theoccupation of Memelin early1940 1939.
