RMS Queen Elizabethwas built by
John Brown and Company
at
Clydebank
,
Scotland
for Cunard White Star Line.
Launched September 27, 1938, she entered service as a troopship during World War II. In 1946,
Queen Elizabeth entered passenger service, allowing Cunard White Star to launch the long-planned transatlantic two-ship weekly service between Southampton and New York along with Queen Mary. Retired in 1969, she was sold at auction in 1970 to
Tung Chao Yung,
head of the
Orient Overseas Line and
renamed Seawise University. She was to
be used as
a university for the
World Campus Afloat
program. Seawise University caught fire on January 9,1972 and was sunk in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor.
